February 8, 2022 - The all-new 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale offers an efficient powertrain that highlights the brand’s commitment to sustainable mobility and performance. This is a natural stage in the brand’s journey toward a propulsion synergy that enhances performance and driving dynamics while respecting fuel efficiency. With the Tonale, Alfa Romeo has not simply adapted to the new standards, it has reinterpreted its DNA in the direction of energy, harmony with the environment and intuitiveness when managing driving modes. 1.3-liter four-cylinder turbo PHEV The Tonale is the most efficient plug-in hybrid C-SUV in the segment, with an electric range of more than 30 miles. Performance is guaranteed by the exclusive 285-horsepower plug-in hybrid Q4 AWD with 347 lb.-ft. of torque. The advanced hybrid system uses the all-aluminum, direct-injection 1.3-liter MultiAir turbocharged four-cylinder engine (180-horsepower) from the Stellantis Global Small Engine family to provide torque to the front wheels. A high-voltage Belt Starter Generator (BSG), mounted to the engine, delivers torque to the crankshaft to smooth transitions during changing driving conditions, in addition to providing seamless stop-start capability. The Tonale’s efficiency and sporty performance is bolstered by a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery with 100 kw capability, nickel manganese cobalt graphite chemistry and prismatic construction. The exclusive pack design is a good example of component specifically developed to enhance the Alfa Romeo spirit. The rear axle of the Tonale is powered by a 90-kW electric motor capable of producing 184 lb.-ft. (250 Nm) of torque from 0 rpm. When the battery is fully charged, the system automatically activates the electric motor to drive the rear wheels. If more traction is requested by the driver via the throttle pedal, the 1.3-liter engine activates to deliver power to the front wheels. The entire plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) system delivers a best-in-class 285 horsepower for a high-performance fun and stability. The 15.5-kWh battery is mounted low, along in the center of the vehicle, and balanced front to rear. This helps with the Tonale PHEV’s 52/48 weight distribution and unparalleled level of traction and driving pleasure. A full battery charge can be achieved in about 2.5 hours when using a Level 2 240-volt charger. The Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV offers three options in delivering electrified power to the wheels, controlled by the D.N.A. selector switch. Each mode also includes changes to the driving dynamics (steering, braking and suspension). Regardless of the mode selected, the Tonale operates as an efficient hybrid once the battery nears its minimum state of charge. Dual Power/Dynamic: Dual Power mode provides maximum performance, guaranteed by full output from the 1.3-liter turbocharged engine and rear electric motor power sources. This mode also gives precise calibration of the throttle pedal and more assertive ecoasting/regenerative braking. Natural: In Natural mode, managing the switch between the electric motor and engine is entirely automatic. The ideal setting for everyday use, the system will bring in the 1.3-liter turbocharged engine when the vehicle shifts into second gear or when more performance or traction is demanded. Advanced Efficiency: The Advanced Efficiency setting is designed for maximum electric range. The Tonale will only use power from the 15.5-kWh battery to drive the rear electric motor for more than 30 miles. Once the battery reaches its minimum state of charge, the 1.3-liter engine will start, and the vehicle will operate like a traditional hybrid with continued efficiency and extended range. The (BSG) eMotor will charge the battery, enabling continued use of the rear e-motor and AWD. The Tonale PHEV also features an eSave mode, which prioritizes propulsion from the 2.0-liter engine, saving the battery charge for later use, such as urban areas where internal combustion propulsion is restricted or a more efficient use of pure electrification. The driver can also choose between Battery Save and Battery Charge during eSave via the Hybrid Electric Pages in the Uconnect monitor. Transmissions The Tonale’s PHEV propulsion system includes a six-speed automatic transmission engineered to maximize the best balance of performance and efficiency of the 1.3-liter turbocharged engine. Tonale also features standard Q4 AWD traction to ensure an unparalleled level of safety and driving pleasure.
